Az orosz titkosrendőrségtől, az FSZB-től kiugrott Alekszandr Litvinyeko 2006-os meggyilkolását valószínűleg Vlagyimir Putyin orosz államfő hagyta jóvá – ezt állapította meg az ügyet vizsgáló brit vizsgálat.
Litvinyenko 2006. november 23-án halt meg egy londoni kórházban, három héttel az után, hogy a brit fővárosban találkozott két orosz ügynökkel, Andrej Lugovojjal és Dmitrij Kovtunnal. A vádak szerint az Oroszországból érkezett ügynökök polónium 210-es izotópot csempésztek Litvinyenko teájába, s az erősen sugárzó anyag három hét alatt végzett a britekhez átállt Litvinyenkóval. A brit rendőrség a merénylet után több, Lugovoj és Kovtun által meglátogatott helyszínen is talált polóniummaradványokat, ám Moszkva nem működött együtt a britekkel és nem adta ki Londonnak a feltételezett merénylőket. Sőt, Lugovojt kitüntették a "haza érdekében tett erőfeszítései" jutalmául.
