Az Egyesült Államokban az fertőzéses esetek száma a 2017-es 173-ról 2022-re 2377-re nőtt. Egyes esetek halálos kimenetelűek lehetnek, ugyanis az említett időszak alatt a kórházi kezelések nagyjából egyharmada végződött halállal. A felmelegedő tengerek is kockázatot jelentenek. A Vibrio vulnificus baktérium sebfertőzést és gasztroenteritiszt okoz, különösen a meleg vizekben fejlődik, és a trópusokról eljutott egészen az Egyesült Államok partjaihoz. A tudósok a globális felmelegedés és a gleccserek olvadása miatt is aggódnak, amely ősi „zombivírusokat” szabadíthat a világra.
